What Does WPM Mean?

WPM stands for Words Per Minute.
It measures how many words you can type in one minute.
For typing tests, one word is standardized as 5 characters (including letters, numbers, spaces, and punctuation).

This way, even if you type longer or shorter words, the calculation stays fair for everyone.

How to Calculate WPM Manually

Here’s the basic formula:

WPM = (Total Characters Typed ÷ 5) ÷ Time in Minutes

Step-by-step:

  1. Count the total number of characters you typed.
  2. Divide that number by 5 (because 1 word = 5 characters).
  3. Divide the result by the number of minutes you spent typing.

Example Calculation

Let’s say you typed 350 characters in 1 minute.

  • 350 ÷ 5 = 70 words
  • 70 ÷ 1 = 70 WPM

✅ Your typing speed would be 50 WPM.

Adjusting for Accuracy

Most professional typing tests also consider errors.
If you made mistakes, your net WPM is lower than your gross WPM.

The formula becomes:

Net WPM = (Total Characters Typed ÷ 5 – Errors) ÷ Time in Minutes

Where Errors = the number of wrong words.

Example with Mistakes

  • You typed 300 characters in 1 minute.
  • You made 5 errors.

Calculation:

  • 300 ÷ 5 = 60 words
  • 60 – 5 = 55 correct words
  • 55 ÷ 1 = 55 Net WPM

✅ Your final typing speed is 55 WPM.
