How many letters are in the German language?
The German alphabet consists of 30 letters, just like the 26 letters of the English alphabet, plus 4 additional characters that are unique to German:
Standard Latin letters (26):
A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z
Additional German-specific letters (4):
Ä (A umlaut)
Ö (O umlaut)
Ü (U umlaut)
ß (Eszett or sharp S)
Note:
The ß does not traditionally exist in uppercase form (it is usually written as SS), but recently the capital version ẞ has been accepted in official documents.
Ae, Oe, Ue sometimes replace the umlauted vowels Ä, Ö, Ü in informal settings such as emails or domain names.
